Not all AI jobs have the same entry requirements. The honest map:
Most accessible without a CS degree
- AI Automation Engineer — values process knowledge and practical building over credentials
- AI Implementation Specialist — deployment, training and adoption work
- AI Trainer / AI Evaluator — many roles hire for domain expertise (law, medicine, finance, writing), not engineering
- AI Product roles — for people already in product or deep domain roles
Accessible with a strong portfolio
- AI Engineer — software fundamentals plus demonstrated LLM application work
- AI Solutions Engineer — technical fluency plus customer skills
Harder without formal background
- ML Engineer / Research Engineer — usually expects CS or equivalent academic depth
